Captain Marvel is a ‘Different Type of Origin Story,’ Says Kevin Feige

Over the course of a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced many types of moviegoers, be they longtime comic fans or people completely new to the world of comics, to newer, more modernized origins for many of Marvel’s characters. But Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says the origin story in Captain Marvel will be of a very different type.

In an interview with Variety at the British Academy Britannia Awards, Feige was asked about Captain Marvel. After praising the film’s cast and progress, Feige said, “This one is very different and very exciting… It takes place in the 1990s and while it is an origin story of our hero, it is a very different type of origin story, which we’re excited to unveil to audiences.”

Feige’s comments about the movie beg the question as to just how much Captain Marvel’s origin story in the film will differ from other MCU movies and the comics themselves. In the comics, Carol Danvers gained her original powers after the explosion of a Kree device called the Psyche-Magnetron merged her genetic structure with that of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, turning her into a human-Kree hybrid, an element the film will keep. Though Marvel’s adaptations are often faithful to their source material, the films have taken creative liberties with the origin stories of their characters, such as situating the creation of Iron Man in Afghanistan instead of Vietnam.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. The film arrives March 8, 2019.
